Preparing For Dog Birth – Some Hints
For many dog owners experiencing the wonders of seeing new life emerge into the world during dog birth is one of the most rewarding parts of of being a dog owner. However, the months and weeks leading up to the birth and the birth itself can be stressful. One of the ways of reducing this stress is to become familiar with how the needs of your dog may change during the run up to birth and what to expect during the process itself.
During the pregnancy the mother dog will put on weight and her abdomen will swell – the owner may also notice that the mammary glands of the dog will become swollen and the first milk will be produced – this is normal. Owners should ensure that the mother dog receives adequate nutrition during this time.
As the big day nears the mother dog will become restless and engage in ‘nesting’ behavior and ignore her food. She may pant and the vulva may become engorged showing signs of a mucous discharge that is clear in nature.
This will be followed by panting and a rhythmic heaving of the abdomen. The first puppy should then make its appearance within one to two hours. The placental membrane may break during this process – however this is not always the case. In some instances the pups may emerge still covered in the membrane. the mother dog will attempt to remove these. If she is tired the owner should lend a gentle helping hand. She will also try to severe the umbilical cords of the pups.
Puppies should then emerge in intervals that range from every 15 minutes to every hour. Once the process has been completed the mother dog will clam down and relax and present her nipples for suckling.
The process should go off without any problems but if the mother dog appears to be in distress a vet should immediately be consulted.
Dog birth is one of the most emotional times for the owner and every moment should be treasured. It is the start of a new chapter in the life of both owner and canine companion.
